Ironman Training Week 15 Summary

Week two of harder workouts. I felt like I was getting sick the week before but was hoping I was going to hold off any sickness that wanted to attack me. My chest was killing me on my long ride on Saturday 2/7. I thought I had won but Sunday night rolled around and I knew I was definitely sick. What a perfect time to get sick! My 100 days of riding would be complete on 2/10. I had to make it to Tuesday so that I could finish and have my bragging rights of having rode my bike (or an exercise bike) for 100 days in a row. Matt had to make some adjustments for me but it all worked out.

Monday: I felt like curling into a ball and not doing anything but sleep. I texted Matt and he called me and told me that I should just ride for 60 minutes super easy. No watch, no HR strap, just ride. So, that’s what I did. I was so beat the only thing that got me through was my mind. I don’t even know how I got my legs to spin. I am guessing my average RPM’s were super low but I didn’t care I just wanted to get the ride done. I was supposed to lift, you can guess, that didn’t happen!

Tuesday: Another day of feeling like hell! I did not get up to do my swim of 4,000 yards. I tried but then I went back to bed because walking to the bathroom was exhausting. I was hoping that my 100th day of riding would be this awesome day where I felt like a champ. I felt like a piece of crap, definitely not a champ. I rode for 60 LONG minutes. I couldn’t believe that I had made it. After I got off the bike I pretty much went to bed and hoped that I was going to feel better…

Wednesday: My first rest day in over 100 days! It was weird. I felt like I was “cheating” on my plan even though the rest day was actually scheduled (ahead of my sickness).

Thursday: Well, I just couldn’t take it anymore and I called in sick to work. I wasn’t sleeping. When I would lay down I would get congested instantly, it sucked. I did take medicine but it didn’t really help. I still rallied and ran 10.02 miles outside and swam 2,700 yards. My chest felt like it was going to explode but I didn’t want to miss or have to adjust any more workouts for the week. I was pretty much laying in bed every other minute I wasn’t running or swimming.

Friday: 1:40 progression ride at 5:28 a.m.! I can’t believe I got up and was on my bike at that time. I had to get my workout done because Lauren’s farewell get together at Empire was planned for after work. The ride went pretty well considering I still didn’t feel 100%. As much as it sucks waking up that early it felt really cool to be able to be done with such a long workout by 7:10 a.m.!

Saturday: Long ride day! I had 2:45 scheduled, pretty much riding in zones 2-4 and then 5a for a little bit. The ride felt solid. I was there mentally and physically. I ran for 30 minutes after on the treadmill. Started at 8:50-9:00 pace, then 8:40-8:50, and then 8:30-8:40. My parents treadmill only reads tenths which is annoying but there are worse problems to have. The run went well. I felt heavy the first 5-7 minutes but that normal coming off the bike. I had a massage at 1:30 p.m. and let me tell you, it felt glorious!

Sunday: Early morning swim with Elyssa. I had 3,400 yards but did 3,200 yards because I obviously can’t read and forgot one 200. Oops! Mark and I went to the gym really late in the afternoon on Sunday and lifted. It’s pretty cool seeing and feeling my body change and become more fit. Hard work definitely pays off!

Ironman Week 15 Totals:

Swim: 5,900 yards

Bike: 5.85 hours

Run: 1:57 minutes

Lift: ~1.5 hours
